Hello fellow unicorns! (That’s what I will call you from now on LOL)
People always make fun of the “teacher’s pet”. I can tell you this because I was one. From kindergarten to getting my Masters, I always made sure to be friendly to teachers and professor. Always keeping a line of respect, but still become comfortable enough to call them by their names. Not everyone can be a “teacher’s pet”, you have to have the right set of skills and character. You can’t be wanting something or looking to get ahead of your fellow students. You have to just be yourself.
How I was a “teacher’s pet”
In my experience, I was made fun of making friends with my teachers. Other students thought I was annoying, a know it all, and always kissing butt. But the thing is, I was friends with my teachers because I was a good and respectful student that was always there to support the teacher or professor, always respecting them, and following their advice. If you want respect from you professors and teachers, you must, and I repeat you must show them you are a hard worker and that you respect them and their knowledge.
As I grew up and I went off to university, I continued the same patter and that is how I ended up getting letters of recommendation for summer research programs and my master’s degree applications. If my professor had not gotten to know me and my work as well as my respect for them, I am likely to not have gotten the letter of recommendation I needed to get into my masters program. Not only did I follow the same patter of respect and hard work in college, but also during my master’s, and that is how I ended up with letters of recommendation from professors in my field that ended up getting me into my PhD program.
So, what now?
If you value your education, you will know that being a “teacher’s pet” is okay. I know I did what I was taught to do from a young age: to respect my elders and those who have more knowledge than me. To say this work is an understatement in my life. So, if you are going through being made fun of for being friends with your teacher, forget about them and continue to do what you are doing.
All the love
